Do you want to know why some people seem to make lots of money on the Internet and others don’t?

But, is there a reason to strive for financial success, besides the money? I’d like to suggest one. Being a millionaire has a nice ring to it. Sounds pretty good. I’ve known several in my lifetime. Not sure that I want to be like several of them.

But if money is your only reason then you won’t succeed. I’d like to suggest another reason.

You should do it for the skills that you will have to learn and the person will have to become. Do it for what you will learn. Do it for your new abilities, new friends, and new knowledge. You will have to learn about the marketplace, society, business, government and taxes.

It’s what you learn and what you become to reach your goal; that is what is valuable. It isn’t the money. Ask yourself what skills will I need to become financially successful?

What kind of communication skills? How should my thinking change? What people should I know? Then learn those, do them, meet them.

The greatest value in the millionaires I admire are the characteristics which they learned along the way. They had a greater self-confidence in themselves and belief in their abilities. Some lost their millions and made them back quickly because of the skills they learned along their journey.

YOU can be one of those 5% who are successful if you are truly motivated and have the right “why”. We’ll talk more about that in a minute. Right now we have to address another point about working on the Internet.

For just a few minutes think of working on the Internet as your job. You wouldn’t work at your company for one week and expect to get paid when the pay cycle is every two weeks, would you? Then don’t expect to start working on the Internet and begin making large amounts of money in one week.

This is not a get rich quick scheme. Those things never work. To develop an income that matches your current job, or that allows you to stay home, you have to work.

There are specific characteristics, which people who make money on the Internet, nurture and develop. You can learn from those characteristics, develop them and become successful yourself.

You start here, right now, today. There are no more excuses. No more reasons why you can’t succeed. There are only reasons why you will succeed.

I am going to list out 14 ways to ensure your success, not only on the Internet, but also in anything you try. This is an active process. So get ready, take notes or highlight sections that appeal to you, and let’s get going!

First, Define Your Reason. This is often overlooked and definitely is the very first thing that you should do. Your reason can’t be just “I want to make a lot of money.” That particular reason won’t keep you motivated when the hard drive on the computer crashes or your newsletter has been banned for spam or your list isn’t growing like you thought it would.

Do this exercise. Sit and really think about why you want to work at home. Think about the things we discussed above AND what is it that you want? Is it money to fund your retirement? Or money to buy a large boat, go on frequent vacations? Do you want to work at home without paying for daycare? Are you interested in the freedom that working at home gives you?

Paint a picture in your mind of what it will be like to work at home. What does that look like to you? Are you in another house? Taking more vacations? Wearing a different wardrobe? Have a gym in your basement? Have your own office?

Now paint that picture with words. Use a 3 x 5 index card or similar size paper and write down what it is that you really want. Tape that paper on your bathroom mirror and look at it every morning. I mean REALLY look at it. Read it. Say it. Believe it.

Sounds easy….. but in practice……. You’re morning is rushed, that piece of paper seems to melt into the background. You’ve seen it every day. It has become familiar.

The old adage “familiarity breeds contempt” is real. Really look at it every morning.

Make it a part of your routine.

We’ve touched on this a little bit but you should also be a dreamer. Most millionaires and billionaires got that way because they weren’t satisfied with the solution to a problem. They dreamed and they dreamed big. Donald Trump says, “If you are going to dream, then dream big.” Rich people could see themselves living a life they wanted and they were willing to make a few time sacrifices to get there.

The beauty of the Internet is that those sacrifices can be smaller than previous millionaires who worked outside the world of technology. Your aim is to work smarter, not harder.

You must be able to dream. Dream about your future. Dream about what your desires are. Dream about your next Internet product or business. Dream about a solution that hasn’t been dreamt yet!

Don’t worry if you aren’t a “natural” dreamer. This is something that can be developed if you want to. It takes daily practice but it is so doable – and so worth it!

Procrastination will kill your dreams every time. You most likely will have tomorrow to finish a project or determine your next niche market. However, if you keep waiting until tomorrow, then tomorrow will never come.

Procrastination is the easy route. It is easier to stay in familiar patterns. It is much more difficult to learn new ways, develop new products, become familiar with new terminology. It is difficult to step outside yourself and Take Action.

Sometimes it really doesn’t matter what that action is as long as you have movement forward.

Print an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper with the words TAKE ACTION and hang it on your refrigerator. Look at it every day. Take action! Write your plan and then work it. If it’s writing e-books then find an ebook expert and join the list. Is it working with an MLM company? Then call your upline and find out what they are doing. Is it developing a new off line business? Then call the Small Business Administration and have them help you develop a plan.

Make a plan and then work it. TAKE ACTION!

There are some people who are so frozen by the thought of making the wrong decision, or the wrong action, that they don’t Make Decisions. You won’t get anywhere without making decisions. I mean nowhere. You’ll be guaranteed a spot among 95% of the people who never succeed, by their own standards.

Let me share a millionaire’s secret. He always has a five-year goal. They change occasionally. He achieves them and move on to new ones. But he always work towards something. He tries to learn something new each day and to stretch himself just a little bit.

Make GROWTH a belief you hold. In order to grow you must make a decision; a
decision to do something new, to learn something, to try something. Indecision is most people’s best friend. Every time you make a decision you move to the next level, in your growth or your business.

Decisions are sometimes scary. Remember that you don’t have to make the right decision you just have to get going. You will make wrong decisions. You will learn from them and you will move on.

Successful people are not born that way. They don’t happen overnight. They are nurtured and developed; and they do it themselves. They make decisions. They make many wrong decisions but they move on. The trick is not failing. The trick is to fail forward and keep moving.

So Get Rid of the Negativity! We all have beliefs that we hold about ourselves; things that we might not share with others but that influence our daily living. Most of us have negative beliefs. And most of us don’t even know what they are.

What negative beliefs are holding you back? Do you think you aren’t worthy of being successful? Do you think you aren’t smart enough to learn a new skill? Do you think that success only happens to the other guy?

Do this exercise (and don’t procrastinate!) – get a piece of paper and write down all the things that are holding you back. Are they negative people in your life? Are they negative thoughts? Are they things that you were told as a child?

When you put them down on paper you realize how powerless they are. Most people keep their negative thoughts in the darkness and away from others. It can be a protection, of sorts. You will find that writing them down, bringing them into the light, brings clarity to your thinking.

Almost 100% of the negative beliefs people hold about themselves are a complete lie.

They just aren’t true. You heard comments when you were younger and after time you begin to believe them. You start to think they are real. They aren’t. You have to remove them from your “self talk” and replace them with other beliefs.

Every day people “talk” to themselves in their head. Let me digress here for a minute and tell you a story.

At the age of eight a young boy went with his older brother and sister in a three-seat parasail. Later when asked if he had been scared he responded that he was but he kept telling himself that he would have fun once he got on the boat.

He said that once he got on the boat he wasn’t scared anymore. At the age of eight this little guy discovered the power of self-talk. This is something that most adults still don’t understand.

You must discover the power of Self Talk and start getting rid of the negativity in your life. This isn’t some new-age, guided meditation thing. This is the reality of what happens to us as human beings. We believe what we hear consistently. If we consistently hear ourselves say “that isn’t possible” then guess what? We’ll believe it!

We also have people in our lives who are sure that the sky is falling. Ignore those people. They may be important in your life but their beliefs are not yours. Do NOT make them your beliefs!

Be a Learner. When you start anything new there is always a learning curve. When I started a new job at a hospital years ago I laughingly told my mother that I was just getting my feet wet but trying to stop from drowning at the same time. I was new to the position, the hospital, the city and the state. I had a million things to learn but the hospital expected me to be fully functional the first day on the job!

Remember you have quite a bit to learn, even if you are a veteran Internet marketer. This technology is changing so quickly that the marketing techniques that worked two months ago may not be as effective today. You have to stay, if not ahead of the curve, at least on top of it.

Learning this kind of material is not like learning in school. You may not have enjoyed reading the Geography text book but you will enjoy learning about the new ways you can market your products, or research your products or the new ways you can produce your products.

Learning every day will stretch your beliefs about yourself. It will change your mindset. It will stretch your growth and also increase your chances for success. You will become a different person. It’s a great process. It is a process. There is no end and that makes learning even more fun! You can dream – so dream BIG.

But Stay Focused. There are only a limited number of resources in your life. You have a limited number of hours in the day and dollars in your advertising budget. Use them wisely. What is the best focus you can have?

Define your niche market and then define it again! Work on small target audiences. Don’t try to be all things to all people. You’ll never succeed.

Let’s take eBay for an example. In their early days they had to make a choice about the focus of the meg-auction site. After a thorough evaluation they determined that their current biggest market was people who sold collectables.

They had to make a choice of where to put their resources. They choose collectables.

Today eBay is the biggest auction site and huge multi-million dollar company. They have many niche markets today, but they also have more resources. Learn from them.

Stay focused on your prize. Don’t get distracted. There are plenty of distractions. You can address them after you have finished your product.

Don’t get caught in the avalanche of ideas that come your way when you start dreaming big. And they do come. Some are great ideas and some are duds. Great ideas can ruin your business and can be worthless. Let me explain.

You have a Million-Dollar-Idea. You write it down. You start your research. You KNOW this is the one. Then you have another Million-Dollar-Idea. You discard the first; you start your research. The cycle starts and is never ending. It all gets back to making a decision, staying focused and taking appropriate action.

They might be Million-Dollar-Ideas. They might be Thousand-Dollar-Ideas. They won’t amount to much if you don’t concentrate on one and let the others go. I don’t mean you should forget them though. Keep an idea file. Write down your ideas. Then focus on ONE.

Take the Long-Term View. Most people want to earn money, become successful, and reach their goals in a matter of weeks. That just isn’t realistic. Rome was not built in a day. I know that expression sounds a bit trite. It is also very true.

Let me tell a quick story from Forbes Magazine. Have you heard of the energy drink Red Bull that’s been a huge hit in the US? Well, Dietrich Mateschitz developed and marketed that drink. He tweaked the formula and developed the marketing plan over a three-year period! Today he is worth 2 Billion dollars!

Many times we act on an idea, do it for a month or two. If it doesn’t work we move on to something else. It couldn’t work for “us”, only for other people. We can repeat this vicious cycle throughout most of our adult lives.

Immediate gratification is a developmental desire. We begin our lives unable to wait for just about anything. Change that outlook as an adult. Look at your idea over a 1 or 2 year view. Have a five-year plan. Give yourself the room to grow. It will pay off in the end. You have to be objective about your project’s long-term growth. Give yourself time to fail forward. Learn from the mistakes and move on.

We will earn the right to be successful through persistence, patience and action.

Aim for Singles, not Homeruns. More than likely your first, second and third ideas will not be homeruns. They won’t make you millions. They’ll make you hundreds and thousands. That’s ok. Hundreds and thousands of dollars are just fine for a beginning.

Aim for those singles and sooner or later – by the law of averages – you hit a homerun.

Last, but certainly not least: this is your passion. Enjoy it and Have Fun! This is a job.

This is serious. But this is not a J.O.B. (Just Over Broke). This is your opportunity to shine. This is your time. Put in the effort, follow the rules and enjoy the fruits of your labors.
